What to think about when choosing your Ski Resort.
The first thing to think about is the group mix. Just because the better skiers might say they don't mind skiing blue runs all day, believe me, this attitude will soon change when they have spent a couple of days on the mountain and that off-piste terrain is calling!

This doesn't mean that you can't holiday with friends of different skiing abilities, just make sure that the resort caters for all of you, which means a bit more research than just looking at the information in the brochure. It is probably not advisable to try and book your holiday independently if you are planning to go to a new resort. With a bit of effort it's possible to find some good deals around for all inclusive packages, and if you want to go back to the same place again, a DIY plan is an option. Do make sure you include all the costs and then compare it with a package before you book. Because the big operators get quantity discounts, you may find that DIY is not that much cheaper any longer, depending on what value you put on piece of mind and someone else to blame if a problem does arise!

Do check out what your friends like to do after their days skiing, you won't see much of them and may not be talking by the end if some of you have visions of quiet evenings in front of a roaring log fire and others prefer a hectic night out in the local watering-hole or nightclub.

Taking children? Remember that they might need alternative entertainment. It doesn't matter how old they are, all children get tired, particularly if the weather comes in and they have to concentrate on their skiing to get down the mountain. Never forget that it can snow too heavily to ski and if bad weather conditions are considered too dangerous the lifts will be closed. There is also that 2 hour slot to think about between getting back to your chalet or hotel and supper. That time you thought you'd ear-marked for some shut-eye and a hot bath before the evenings festivities can be competely wrecked by bored, hungry and tired children.

All this doesn't mean that you have to go for an expensive option that includes nannies and clubs, just make sure that where you are staying has a DVD or video player, welcomes children, that you take a game or two and a swimming pool in the building is always helpful even if you do have to supervise. If you don't have other children in your party, don't assume that there will be other children staying in the same place that will entertain yours. Believe me you can find yourselves with the only children in the place, and you might end up spending your entire holiday ensuring that they don't upset the other guests.

Transport. Don't forget about how you are going to get from where you are staying to the slopes. If you plan to ski at Easter and are lucky enough to be staying in accomodation that is advertised as ski-in ski-out check that this is still the case when you want to go. As the season goes on and the weather gets warmer ski-in ski-out can be a bit of a mis-noma. Alternatively, as happened to us once, your ski-in ski-out chalet can mean skiing through other people's gardens, if you know the way. When we were there snow was short and so didn't cover all the garden fences which meant we couldn't ski across even if we had known the way. The only option was a 15 minute walk up a hill. Hard work in your ski boots carrying not only your own skis but your children's as well!! Finally double any walking time given in brochures for distances between accomodation and buses or slopes. It might not be quite that much, but it will usually take you longer than it says in your skiboots.

Insurance. As the fashion for holidaying in more unusual ski resorts grows, do ensure that you are fully covered for all eventualities, particularly if you are going out of Europe.
